The moment you step into the pages of The Velveteen Rabbit, you are immersed in a world filled with magic, love, and the deep journey of becoming truly real. This timeless children’s book by Margery Williams explores the power of love and the bittersweet nature of growing up. First published in 1922, this story continues to resonate with all children in my class, capturing their imagination and hearts.

The Tale of the Velveteen Rabbit

At its core, The Velveteen Rabbit tells a touching story about a stuffed rabbit yearning to become real through the love of a child. The narrative begins in a nursery filled with new toys, but it’s the Velveteen Rabbit’s deep desire to be loved that distinguishes him. The book beautifully captures what it means to love and to be loved, illustrating how these emotions can transform even the simplest toys into something extraordinary.

When the boy first receives the Velveteen Rabbit, he is captivated but treats him just like another toy. However, as he grows to love the rabbit, the toy becomes worn and tattered and a deep bond begins to grow.

Bringing the story to life

"When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become real," said the Skin Horse.

There was only one way to find out if this is true. We bought a Velveteen Rabbit for the classroom, named him, cuddled him, took turns to take him home. The children wrote him letters and drew him pictures. They talked to him every day and sang him to sleep.

Did he become real? You will have to get your own Velveteen Rabbit and find out for yourself!
